Advanced Civil Litigation Course for Legal Professionals


This course is designed for the legal professional with more than one year of civil litigation experience.


Topics covered in the training:

  • Commencement of Civil Actions: Focus on limited and unlimited civil actions and will discuss more advanced ways to serve the Complaint, other forms of an Answer to the Complaint, the default process, Case Management Conferences, calendaring, and more.
  • Advanced Discovery: Focus on discovery in Limited Jurisdiction and Unlimited Jurisdiction cases, and less common discovery methods and more.
  • Advanced Motions: Focus on preparing pre-trial motions and discovery motions, oppositions and replies, tentative rulings, remote appearances, ex parte applications, motion for summary judgment/summary adjudication, and more.
  • Advanced Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR): A focus on early settlement conferences, mediation, binding and non-binding arbitration, neutral evaluation, discovery, and more. 
  • Advanced Pre-Trial Practice: A focus on the 100 days before trial, prepared testimony, request for statement, expedited jury trials (voluntary and mandatory), offer to compromise, calendaring, and more.
  • Advanced Post-Trial Practice: Focus on appeals, post-trial motions, e-filing procedures, appellate briefs, methods of collection of judgments, and more.

Your Instructor:

Maria Bishop, CCLS

Maria has over 30 years of civil litigation experience. She has been self-employed as a legal assistant since 2016, working remotely for sole practitioners. Maria obtained her paralegal certificate from Kaplan College in 2001. She has been a member of Mt. Diablo Legal Professionals since 1994, is a past president, and is currently the Treasurer and Webmaster. At the Legal Professionals Inc. state level, Maria is currently the California Certified Legal Secretary Certifying Board Chair, and has served as LPI’s Editor-in-Chief of the Publications Revision Committee.
