This course is designed for the beginning legal secretary with less than one year of civil litigation experience.
Topics covered in the training:
- Filing and Serving Initial Pleadings: An introduction to the procedures for initiating civil cases, including the preparation and filing of complaints, summons, and other pleadings.
- Discovery: The process of gathering information, including interrogatories, depositions, requests for documents, and responses.
- Motions: An overview of preparing and handling motions, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, and others.
- Pre-Trial Practice: A focus on preparation before trial, including organizing exhibits, assisting with witness preparation, and scheduling.
- Post-Trial Practice: Procedures after trial, including judgments, appeals, and enforcement actions.
- Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR): An introduction to ADR methods such as mediation and arbitration.

Maria Bishop, CCLS
Maria has over 30 years of civil litigation experience. She has been self-employed as a legal assistant since 2016, working remotely for sole practitioners. Maria obtained her paralegal certificate from Kaplan College in 2001. She has been a member of Mt. Diablo Legal Professionals since 1994, is a past president, and is currently the Treasurer and Webmaster. At the Legal Professionals Inc. state level, Maria is currently the California Certified Legal Secretary Certifying Board Chair, and has served as LPI’s Editor-in-Chief of the Publications Revision Committee.
